At one time I worked on a microwave assembly line and one of my duties was to stick the rubber vibration dampner onto the transformer. Having no place but the floor(which I had to keep clean) to deposit the resulting peel off paper, I began to put them inside the microwave cavity. As they would go through testing the small plastic coated piece of paper would ignite itself and produce just exactly the plasma effect you describe, much to the consternation of the testers! Now years later I've used the microwave for some slightly (but not much) more sophisticated plasma tests.
