I'll look around for an online reference, but almost any basic electric power text will cover this. I'd suggest Wildi, "Electrical Machines, Drives, and Power Systems" as a good basic text on AC/DC motors, transformers, and power distribution stuff. Not much on HV, per se. but good explanations both intuitive and analytical for induction and sync motors, etc.

The inverters almost always used forced commutation of large stacks of "hockey puck" thyristors. The latest technique is using optical fiber to trigger them all.
