I was looking through the literature on IEC's and I kept running into articles by the team at the University of Illinois that talks about a cylindrical IEC.
Based on the description, it seems a far easier device to make than our current spherical fusors. They also have neutron outputs better than our spherical devices and are more convenient for pure research purposes.
If you think about it particle confinement in IEC's is non-Maxwellian so a cylinder should have superior particle confinement.
