Yes, Bush presented "lip service" and demonstrates a propensity to back track on promises. However, Bush retains the honor of solely holding the spotlight for lip service to fusion. I take that over silence. Several months ago, I delivered a letter advocating fusion research to Governor Davis' office here in Sacramento. Governor Davis failed to respond.
In the analysis of Davis' actions (or lack of), a pattern emerges of secrecy and hiding. Yes, he proliferated new power plants but the reason his popularity fell resides in his lack of action to be upfront with the people. Would I walk a different path. You bet! Symbolic "door-to-door" walking dominates popularity ratings and Governor Davis failed to "walk the walk, talk the talk and say the say."
We need a champion to boldly commit to progress in fusion. I see a melding of the different approaches now emerging. I am very curious about the Farnsworth approach. What I see now are neat items of clean-packaged machinery. Do these apparatus produce characteristic signatures of the tremendous release of energy latent in matter?
