Re[3]: Flange welding...

I too am entering my flange welding period.

I have the eight inch spheres, and the rest of the stuff is in the mail. There will be three ports in the chamber,

1. north pole: HV feedthrough
2. south pole: vacuum line
3. forty fifth parallel: viewport, up to air and vacuum gauge combo.

All ports 2.75" conflat. I am chopping up a conflat "T" today to get the needed flanges and nipples.

There two possible "candidates" for doing the welding job, one works in the bike frame shop, has lime green hair and a nose ring, the other is 78 years old but he has been running a machine shop for 45 years.

Well anyway, even with TIG welding there must be some tricks to welding the flanges to avoid having them warp into something looks like a Mobius strip. I mean do you tack weld around the joint, or just clamp it down and run a continuous bead?
